I made a big discovery a few week-ends ago :) This post is both a travel report and a "J'aimerai" chronicle, as I discovered the mounts and valleys of the Appenine Emiliane and note to myself, would love to go back!

- The Apennines are a mountain range consisting of parallel smaller chains extending c. 1,200 km (750 mi) along the length of peninsular Italy. In the northwest they join with the Ligurian Alps at Altare. In the southwest they end at Reggio di Calabria, the coastal city at the tip of the peninsula. Highest point is Il Gran Sasso d'Italia (cit wikipedia).
- Emilia, from the name of the region of Emilia Romagna, capital Bologna. One of the richest in Italy center of the automotive industry (Ferrari, Lamborghini, Ducati..) and food (Barilla…)  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emilia-Romagna

As usual we had a rough plan, something like, we would like to avoid the rain, go to the countryside and have a quiet time, possibly walking a little as well. We didn't really know where we were going and had no idea were to stay overnight. Then we found out that there were some hostels for 15eur a night. Therefore we headed from Parma to Costa mezzana a small village on the hill on Friday night. Getting the keys of that hostel room was like a mafia scenario. The village was so big it had only a single bar and a church. We were told to arrive after 21.30 because as we got to understand later, that night there was a special service for the Virgin Mary (May 31st is visitation day) and the religious ladies were attending the "rosario" in some other place. So it was dark, windy, on the top of a hill, only 2 streets in this village. Finally a mythical Pandino (Fiat Panda) arrived and stopped right in front of the bar. Our landlady had arrived, some kind of very animated older widow lady. I had to bite my lip in order not to laugh when she took note of all our ID details :) Then we discovered why there was an hostel in such a random place… We were on Pilgrim way… the Pilgrim way from Canterbury to Rome called Via Franciscena. Over the next days we moved then more inland from Costamezzana, Fornovo di Taro (along the river), and then the historic way (SS62) crossing from Parma to La Spezia on the Mediterranean sea and stopping for a second night at the hostel of Cassio.

Some things never change...

I had written this post 3 years ago about buying international train tickets in Italy and it's still really up to date:

1- In Italy, you can still not get a quote or book any international train ticket on the italian website if it's not a pure "artesia" journey, only option then would be to get to Milano Centrale and queue for 1h30 to get the price and eventually book. But it's quite time consuming, and what if you just want to compare with the air fares? What I did is checking the options online and then ask our corporate travel agency for a quote of the journey - just to be sure to queue if I really want the tickets...

2- In France, you can book the ticket on the french website but you cannot print them unlike a boarding pass. In France it would not be such a hassle to get the ticket issued in any station or sent at home, but abroad the only option is to go the Rail Europe Milan where they will charge you 10 eur extra for printing the tickets you desperately need. And obviously they are closed everyday between 12.30pm and 2pm...

In the days of electronic travel retail why are these train companies not able to compete in service with airlines? They have made some progress on national travels and I guess only a few private individuals are in my same case, most either go to the station or book through a travel agency. No business need... no improvement...

Puglia is situated at the south-eastern tip of the Italian peninsula.

I have kind of an attraction for Puglia. "Sous le soleil des Scorta" written by Laurent Gaudé won the Goncourt Prize in 2004 - Claudia my flatmate and friend shared with me this culture from the south - This spring I almost got a job to work in a factory in Lecce - I planned a camping trip to Puglia during the G8 (however the plan failed) - well some things definitely link me to Puglia :)

I entered Puglia for the first time about 10 days ago. Unfortunately it was not at the seaside but in the mountain part, in a village 30 kms from Foggia, called Castelnuovo della Daunia. We carpooled from Rome and got lost!

Listen, now comes the important lesson you have to learn BEFORE entering as an innocent tourist Puglia for the first time: In Puglia, never trust road signs! I was told so by my italian friends. And I can tell you it's not a lie. Or road sings are inexistant, or they are so far away from one another that you have 100% chances to take the wrong direction at all intermediate crossroads, or they contradict themselves! See below, the only two signs we found for Castelnuovo della Daunia, on the same public square: one showing left, the other right...

August break in Rome.

The 8th month is reputed dead in the city. Shops are closed, public transports are slowing down, italians are at the sea side, the metro to the beach is crowded... 2009 was the first year I was experiencing it in Rome. In my opinion it was fine, even though some of my usual shops were closed. I just felt the emptiness on the Ferragosto (Assumption) week-end. The building was empty. Even Italians that are not on holidays at that time (a small portion) leave the city to visit family or spend a long week-end at the sea or countryside. The only thing you should avoid just before Assumption day is to look for a sun lotion because you are supposed to go to the beach on the next day.... I did it, and had troubles to find what I wanted without spending the triple of the usual price in a pharmacy :D

In Italy you have to ways of fill your tank: the lazy way (or generous one if you consider you are sustaining the economy by keeping more jobs in petrol stations) or the healthy way (or not because you have to get out of your car and breathe all the pollution around).

The basic choice is to be served or not? And I always wondered what was the price difference or if you had to tip the employee filling your tank. Now I have the answer.... 0,039 EUR/L. 1,755 EUR for a 45L tank. The choice is yours!
