Chroniques Italiennes, le train

J'ai décidé de vous faire partager quelques moments classiques d'une vie en Italie. Matin et soir j'ai l'honneur de voyager à bord des trains de la FS (Ferrovie dello Stato alias trenitalia) donc premier sujet, de triste actualité, le train.

Quoiqu'on en dise, je vous conseille vivement de voyager en train le week-end direction la campagne: c'est paisible, relaxant, on s'arrête au milieu de nulle part.

Le classique des classiques: le retard. Je prends un train qui a une fréquence de 4/h. Une fois que le train a dépassé les 15 mins de retard, il n'est plus en retard puisque c'est l'horaire du suivant... malin!

Autre classique, les wagons à climatisation sans AC. C'est une vraie fournaise parce qu'il n'y a que 2 fenêtres minuscules. Alors comme ce soir, tout le monde se fabrique un éventail de fortune, et je me me mets à rire de voir ces hommes s'éventer avec qui un bout de journal, qui un dossier ou de les voir dégouliner.

conseil n°1 Toujours courir pour attraper son train parce qu'on n'est jamais sûr que le suivant passera. Un matin, je suis arrivée sur le quai au moment où le train démarrait, après un sprint pour remonter les 25 voies de la gare de Roma Tiburtina. Le train suivant est arrivé avec 10 mins de retard, nous sommes montés à bord mais il n'est jamais reparti! Aucune annonce par haut-parleurs, aucune information, rien... Heureusement que j'ai eu un tuyau et j'ai pu prendre le train suivant, donc juste une 1/2h de retard. Mes collègues ont eu moins de chance et sont arrivés avec plus d'une heure de retard au boulot.

conseil n°2 En juin, surtout ne pas frauder. C'est le mois des contrôles. Je n'ai été contrôlée qu'une seule fois en 3 mois puis 3 fois en une semaine en juin. Et d'après les romains c'est une stratégie bien connue.

conseil n°3 Pour éviter les files, prendre son ticket (pour les trains régionaux) chez le marchand de journaux (Bar-Tabac) présent dans la gare. Sinon vous avez de grandes chances de rater votre train.

Beach 1st 2009

Almost one month ago I went for my first sea bath of the year.



Ladispoli-Cerveteri is North from Rome, about 40 minutes by train (3,40EUR x2). Non crowded public black sand beaches. You also have lots of roman vestiges in order to balance your beach day with some cultural activities.

A perfect day trip from Rome!

Skyscanner, the tool!

For those who went through the hassle of checking all combination of dates, airlines and destinations in order to find (maybe) the lowest fare... Skyscanner will change your life. http://www.skyscanner.it/ (I don't know why the .net doesn't work anymore...) I put the link in my favorites.

It's a very flexible searching tool. I love the "whole month" searching function that gives you an overview of the lowest fares.

Another interesting feature is the "everywhere" destination. It gives you a selection in ascending price order of the airports you can fly to. If you have a fixed budget it's an interesting option to find out the cheapest flights.

Elle italia against...

Once a year I buy Elle Italia at the airport. The price per page is usually a good bargain! And you can even exchange it as I did this year for a the hungarian InStyle ;-)

Cuisine, cuisine...

14 weeks after arriving in Rome, I urgently needed to taste some other food again... 14 weeks of an italian regime made of pasta, roasted meat, salad and fruits. It is very good and healthy but I started to be bored. Not that italian food is repetitive, it's just the canteen that offers every week the same menu and that I was used to eat very different types meals when I was at home. (My mum is a good cook and has eclectic skills).

So I spent the week-end at home, cooking... I started on Saturday with the ingredients I had in the fridge. The eggplant became a Caviar d'Aubergines accompanied with tuna spread (tuna + philadephia-type cheese) on toasted bread to have a light lunch. That's a good idea for a starter inspired by the italian bruschetta. Then I had peaches left and asked myself what could I do with these fruits????? and I typed "pêches" in the search engine of marmiton.org. After eliminating all the sweets, I decided to try a recipe of Curry de porc aux pêches. I made my shopping list, went shopping and came back with the required ingredients + 700g of abricots and rabbit. I cooked my curry in the late afternoon and I'm so happy because it tasted like the curry at the indian restaurant :D

Sunday, I prepared Iced Tea but I still don't manage to get something balanced or it's tasteless, or too sweet or too strong. As I have 500g loose black tea left... I have time to make experiments! Then I had to cook my rabbit, never done that in my life so I had to phone the helpdesk ;) actually I was calling for the abricots pie (tarte aux abricots). I decided to go on for the Lapin à la moutarde. It's still cooking at the time of writing because I'm using the old methods... i.e. fire and pan (no pressure cooker at my disposal). Meanwhile I backed a simple cake for Charlotte's birthday and will postpone the abricots pie to tomorrow because I'm missing some ingredients.

And then you understand why people are cooking... because they want to eat what they like and it tastes sooo much better!!!! I agree it takes time, but isnt' it worth it?

PS/ Don't believe in the rumor and use garlic, it's fantastic and has lots of medicinal properties as well.
